Fit Kids

aekwondo increases flexibility, builds strength—and helps kids stop kicking just for fun. But one of the best things about this Olympic sport is that adults can enjoy it just as much as children can! Learn the martial art as a form of self-defense or just to help work through the stress of everyday life.

Check out the classes at Dallas’ American Karate and Self Defense (near Lake Highland Park). Children ages 4-6 may start with the Little Dragons program and work their way up from white belt into the more advanced black-belt classes for ages 6-13. Adults can get into the fun and fitness too, with advanced taekwondo training and a weapons class twice per month. 214/327-8585; www.raysamericankarate.net.

In Irving, try Valley Ranch Taekwondo, which offers classes for preschoolers through adults. The Little Cobras program, for children ages 3-6, aims to help kids excel by teaching focus, teamwork, discipline and more in addition to taekwondo skills. A family class from 11:35am-12:20pm allows kids and parents to get fit together. 214/498-6536; www.valleyranchtaekwondo.com.
