Fashion Advice: Daddy-Do-Over Makeover
Hope Work describes her husband as a dad who never takes time for himself. (Sound familiar, guys?) He bustles between three part-time jobs, in between taking care of his 3-year-old daughter and household chores (he washes the dishes!) while his wife works as a full-time teacher. Hope shares that even though her husband has a great sense of humor, he feels dark and gloomy in his clothes – hand-me-downs from his father who is twice his size. We are smitten. Meet our Daddy-Do-Over winner: Joshua Work, who is 5’8” and should wear 30-inch trousers and small shirts, really didn’t mind donning his dad’s oversized (extra large) duds because they are comfortable. I hear this same refrain from almost every guy I work with. First lesson: Comfort and fashion are not mutually exclusive. With the help of the Billy Reid boutique in NorthPark Center, I led Joshua to classic p
ieces that he can wear for many years. His lifestyle does not require a suit and tie, so I opted to fit him in a great pair of khakis. A flat front khaki is flattering on most body types, especially a small frame like Joshua’s (I didn’t want him to get lost in sea of pleats!). This season is all about color – even for men – so I chose a turquoise-checked cotton shirt for him. Just by virtue of having clothes that fit, Joshua already looks like a new man. I also recommended “dress polo” shirts (light colors, of course!). They boast a slimmer fit, tuck in nicely and convey an effortless dressy/casual look. Due to all of his responsibilities, Joshua found it difficult to squeeze in timely haircuts – his grandmother cut his hair for him (four months ago). Although she did her best, the professional touch was definitely missing. Joshua’s good looks were hi
ding behind his overgrown goatee and mass of hair. Peg Cribari, from Dallas’ Salon Three Thirty, updated Joshua’s Joey-Lawrence-esque locks. “I took it quite a bit shorter and gave him a more fashion forward look. The cut will be pretty low maintenance; he’ll just have to towel it dry and use some pomade to separate it and freshen the look,” she offers. Like most men, Joshua had not been introduced to a facial/cleansing regimen. A low maintenance routine is in order, if he is going to keep it up. The Kiehl’s boutique in Highland Park Village boiled it down to three simple products for everyday use: Face wash, toner and moisturizer. Joshua, a big kid at heart, can now add style to his long list of flattering attributes.
